The story of Lilias Trotter

EWG Storytelling Lilias Trotte

YouTube documentary 'Many beautiful things' (1hour 10 minutes)
The Life and Vision of Lilias Trotter | Ashley Adams Beach | Jerry Eisley
Featuring the voices of Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey) and John Rhys-Davies (Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones).

Many Beautiful Things tells the story of Lilias Trotter, a 19th century British painter who sacrificed artistic fame in order to serve God as a missionary in Algeria. Trotter's extraordinary gift was noticed by famous art critic, John Ruskin who believed Trotter could become one of England's greatest artists.

Extra information can be found on the Lilias Trotter Legacy website.

A shorter audio: 'The Lilias Trotter story' (5 minutes)
Be inspired by this synopsis of an amazing woman's life; who, as a gifted 34 year old artist, obeyed God's call to be a missionary to North Africa instead; where - in spite of her poor health - she served in Algeria for 40 years: leaving behind 30 other missionaries working in 13 ministries she was a part of developing. Her booklet entitled "Focus" inspired Helen H. Lemmel to write the song, Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus.

'Can you think of an animal that made you see life differently?'
This was the title of our first Story Telling event held in July 2019 at Oak Tree Animals' Charity woods in Wetheral Shields.

Twenty four people gathered to hear six stories of six minutes each. The stories included donkeys, a dog, some goats, an alpaca and a ferocious looking South African 'spider'. The stories varied in their content from fun, profound to challenging. The evening included laughter and tears, and a sense of togetherness as the sun when down.

A loud honking of geese from the nearby Eden River marked the end of the evening, right on cue for Graeme Skinner to talk briefly about the idea of the Eden Wild Goose Community.

Story Telling events are about learning from each other, community building and enjoying the moment. If you have an idea for a subject and a venue please contact Graeme on 0128 561358 to discuss it.
