Service Rota - Usual Service Pattern

To come into effect as of September 2010
All Age Worship
This is a new venture (as of September 2010) aimed at reaching out into our communities in a non-threatening way by taking church out of our buildings and into communal contexts around the parish (i.e. village halls and school halls). All the congregations come together to worship in a relaxed and informal way at this service with no hymn books or service books provided, instead everything is projected on to a screen. The service leaders don’t wear robes and the teaching (part of a Sermon Series) and singing is designed to appeal to all ages. Refreshments are served afterwards. Please note that this service alternates each month between Holme Eden parish and Wetheral parish.
Family Communion
On the few occasions during the year that there is a 5th Sunday of the month the congregations come together for a united service somewhere in the benefice. This takes the form of a family communion which is a less formal version of the usual service of holy communion. The teaching and the singing is aimed at all ages and the liturgy, taken from Common Worship is more accessible (Order 1 - Prayer H is used). Occasionally powerpoint is used and the service leaders will robe for this service. There is the opportunity to stay for refreshments afterwards.
Family Service
On the first Sunday of the month at Holme Eden and Wetheral there is a service for all the family. The feel is less ‘formal’ and the teaching and singing is designed to appeal to all tastes. Powerpoint is often used and from time to time the uniformed organisations join us for ‘church parade’. We also occasionally have baptisms and thanksgivings during the service. At Holme Eden the practice is for the service leader not to wear robes. Refreshments are always served afterwards.
Holy Communion (BCP)
The service at 8:30am on the 3rd Sunday of the month alternates each month between Holme Eden and Wetheral and is a quiet, early morning service from the Book of Common Prayer with a short homily from the Prayer Book lectionary. It is particularly suited to those who prefer an opportunity for a reflective act of worship without the hustle and bustle found at the other services. It is entirely spoken (i.e. there are no hymns) and lasts for approximately 30 minutes. The service leader wears robes.
As with the 8:30am service, the 2:00pm meeting at Warwick on the 1st Sunday of the month is taken from the Book of Common Prayer and includes a short homily based on a passage of scripture from the Prayer Book lectionary. Unlike the early morning meeting, this service has hymns played on the organ and lasts for approximately 45 minutes. There is the opportunity to stay for refreshments afterwards.
Holy Communion
This service is taken from Common Worship (Order 2 - Prayer C is used) but will vary slightly in style depending upon the church. Wetheral will be a sung choral service led by the choir, whereas at Holme Eden it is more simple with the singing led by a piano. The teaching is the same at both churches however (part of a Sermon Series) and the service leaders wear robes. Refreshments are served afterwards.
Service of the Word
This service will be different dependent upon which church you visit! It is deliberately vague to enable the churches to express themselves in ways that reflects their particular style and preference. There may be the option of sung Matins from the Book of Common Prayer accompanied by the choir or alternatively an informal service with little that is traditionally Anglican in style and content. It may be that what is offered is something in between – a simple said service of Morning Prayer with hymns. Whatever the type of service, the teaching will be the same (part of a Sermon Series) and the service leaders will wear robes. Refreshments are served afterwards.
